QUINT (Prepared by Mrs N. Robinson)
Benjamin[1], came from Portsmouth, NH, in 1792, on horseback, and settled in Orford, NH, clearing up 25 acres of land in the east part of the town afterward called Quint town in his honor. He served in the American navy in the Revolutionary war, serving under John Paul Jones on baord the Bon Homme Richard in the action of that ship with the Serapis in 1779. He d. in Orford at an advanced age. He had two sons Benjamin and Josiah. Descendants of the former still live in Orford, where both sons were born.
Josiah[2], (Benjamin[1]) b. Orford, NH, 1789; came to R. in 1814 and m. Janet, dau. Alexander Miller (b. Dec 23, 1702; d. 1848) They lived in Bath, NH at E. Rygate and other places, but settled finally on what was called "Miller's Mills," and later the "Quint place," on the river road below So. Rygate, where he carried on the business of grinding oat meal and hulling barley, the only mill of the kind in this section.
