An unusual ceiling medallion. The medallions were actually painted white.
Their purpose was to "catch" the soot from the gas lights and get dirty, thereby protecting the ceiling from
getting dirty. It was considerably easier to paint the medallions occasionally rather then the whole ceiling! |
